ChromoSelect® Bacillus Agar

alt=
Description:

Recent media reports have identified contaminated infant formulas on the market across several European countries, highlighting a critical food safety concern for highly vulnerable consumers. Bacillus cereus remains a key organism of concern due to its heat-resistant emetic toxin, cereulide; its heat-labile enterotoxins; its ability to survive in powdered milk; and its potential to cause serious illness in infants.

Bacillus cereus is a ubiquitous, spore-forming, Gram-positive aerobic bacterium commonly found in soil, water, and vegetation. Foodborne illnesses caused by this organism are often underdiagnosed and underreported, largely due to the brief duration of symptoms.

Powdered infant formula and cereal-based infant foods are not sterile products. While manufacturing controls aim to minimize microbial contamination, spores can survive processing and, under favorable post-reconstitution conditions (e.g., temperature abuse), may germinate and proliferate.

Bacillus ChromoSelect® agar (article number 92325) is a chromogenic culture medium designed specifically for the selective detection and enumeration of Bacillus cereus group bacteria in environmental and food samples. It simplifies colony reading after only 18-24 hours of incubation at 30 °C, offering intense blue colonies on a translucent pinkish agar background, which allows for easy identification compared to traditional mannitol-based agars. Unlike classical media such as MYP or Mossel agar, it does not require egg yolk emulsion, reducing complexity.

The medium shows a characteristic growth for Bacillus cereus. It also has a longer shelf life for prepared plates compared to MYP and Mossel agar, which only have a 5-day shelf life.  This agar is particularly well-suited for testing Bacillus cereus to ensure the absence of the bacterium and to minimize the risk of the heat-resistant toxin in powdered and processed foods that are commonly associated with foodborne illnesses.

Application:
Bacillus ChromoSelect® agar is especially valuable in food safety testing, where Bacillus cereus contamination can pose severe risks, particularly in high-risk foods like infant formulas, rice dishes, and starchy prepared meals. The ability of Bacillus cereus to form spores and produce the stable cereulide toxin demands sensitive and specific detection methods to prevent outbreaks and large-scale recalls. The medium supports rapid and accurate detection, integral to preventive microbiological controls in food production and environmental monitoring.

Key Points:
  • Provides highly sensitive and specific detection of the Bacillus cereus group.
  • Offers simpler and more reliable colony reading compared to traditional mannitol-based media, with intensely blue colonies on translucent pinkish agar, making it easier to identify in mixed flora samples.
  • Does not require the addition of egg yolk emulsion, unlike some classical Bacillus cereus media such as MYP or Mossel agar, simplifying preparation and handling.
  • Has a longer shelf life for prepared plates when compared to MYP and Mossel agar, which have only a 5-day shelf life, improving laboratory workflow and reducing waste.
