INTEGRA Biosciences is pleased to announce that its ongoing partnership with CleanHub is continuing to make a difference in the fight against plastic pollution entering our oceans. With the help of INTEGRA’s donations, CleanHub and its local partners have collected over 21.5 million kilograms of plastic from coastal homes and businesses in developing countries, preventing it from entering our oceans.
Access to waste management facilities remains scarce in many coastal areas worldwide; more than 2 billion people lack the means to recycle their plastic waste, leading to the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic waste entering the ocean every minute. This wreaks havoc on marine ecosystems, and ocean-borne plastic waste is responsible for the death of millions of sea creatures every year. Alarmingly, the microplastics consumed by marine animals can be passed up the food chain and into the food we consume, potentially exposing us to the toxic chemicals found in plastics.
CleanHub recognizes that it is more efficient to deal with plastic pollution on land, before it reaches waterways and disperses. CleanHub has established waste collection networks in coastal areas around the world, reaching over 2,500,000 households. Recyclable plastics are separated out and sent to local processing sites, while non-recyclable plastics are used as a fuel source in energy-intensive factories, such as cement plants. The company’s work to protect the oceans also supports people and communities by creating safe, stable and fairly paid local waste management jobs, as well as inspiring responsible waste disposal habits that will help to preserve the natural environment around them.
Dr Ursula Leuthold, Sustainability Coordinator at INTEGRA Biosciences, said: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at INTEGRA, making CleanHub a logical partner. Building on the success of last year, our financial contributions in 2025 have helped with the collection of over 8.2 million kilograms of plastic waste from communities and waterways so far, and we are proud to support CleanHub’s efforts to clean up our blue planet.”
