Ready to Use Agar Plate Manufacturers: Add Value With Smartphone Colony Counter
German-based software company Oculyze has announced the launch of its newest product, an Automated Colony Counter for pre-poured agar plates. This innovative tool allows laboratory analysts to quantify the number of colonies on a Petri dish by simply using their smartphone camera.
Counting colonies by hand can be a tedious and error-prone process. Oculyze's automatic counter accurately and quickly counts the colonies by just uploading the image of a Petri dish. The image analysis is already tailored to the specific type of plate to be analyzed and does not require any settings to be made by the user. The results of the colony counting are 100% reproducible, with no inter-operator variance and the user can easily visually check the accuracy of the automated counting.
The workflow for lab analysts is simple: each pre-poured plate comes with a QR code that, when scanned with a smartphone, opens a mobile page in the browser (no extra app needed). Additional info about the sample can be entered (optional), and after taking an image, it gets uploaded for analysis. Results are shown to the user within seconds. This makes the process extremely simple, fast, and efficient.
Optionally, for QC managers and supervisors, the tool offers global remote access to all analysis details (restricted to authorized personnel), automated documentation (including custom reports and analyses), LIMS integration to centralize all data and keep all systems in sync, and automated meta-analysis possible to flag data for review, trend recognition, etc.
The potential business models for the Oculyze Colony Counter includes adding value to each Petri dish sold or as extra revenue for a software-as-a-service. It offers the possibility to upgrade the existing offerings of Petri dish manufacturers and set their businesses apart from their competition by allowing customers to skip the tedious manual counting.
