Automated Laser Marker Revolutionizes Identification of Sample Storage Tubes

1926_AFYS3G_LaserEtchedTubesThe Lambda576, the first-of-its-kind automated laser marker, from AFYS3G can mark tubes from a variety of sizes and brands. Using the device, no labels, stickers or ink are used. The laser engraves markings with any shape, logo, text or sample ID directly onto the surface of each tube. The automated system can hold up to 6 racks with sample storage tubes in ANSI / SLAS format. The markings are resistant against chemicals, mechanical abrasion and temperatures between +100ºC and -196ºC, ensuring sample traceability.

Because the system uses a laser to engrave high-resolution makings, there is no need to change labels or ink ribbons. The laser engraved markings are resistant against chemicals, mechanical abrasion and extreme temperatures. Consequently, the markings cannot be separated from labware and can never wear off. The laser can even be used to mark labware under extreme circumstances. For example, the Lambda576 can mark sample storage tubes directly out of a -80°C freezer without any difficulty.  Overall, the system can ensure the absolute traceability of sample storage tubes for long term use.

Traditional laboratory benchtop devices use ink or labels to mark tubes. But instead of printing detachable ink on the outer surface of tubes, the Lambda576 engraves definite markings with a laser into the surface of tubes. The markings can be engraved into various tube sizes as long as they fit in an ANSI/SLAS format rack. The Lambda576 laser system is capable of picking up a tube from the rack with the gripper,  move the tube towards the camera that situated in the laser system and the camera will detect the laser friendly part of the tube. After the detection of the laser friendly surface of the tube is done the gripper will aim this part towards the laser and any information can be laser etched directly into the tube.

User-friendly software enables users to create, select and laser custom markings. For example, markings can be engraved into a non-transparent area of a sample storage tube, allowing markings to be read regardless of the type/color of samples. Tubes from various suppliers such as Brooks, Greiner, LVL, Micronic, and Thermo are compatible with the Lambda576. By simply changing the racks and software settings, one system can be used for various brands and tubes.

AFYS3G’s laboratory benchtop equipment is designed and assembled in-house by specialists at the AFYS3G headquarters in The Netherlands. Because AFYS3G assembles equipment in-house, the Lambda576 can be made compatible with specific applications.
