Research studies have shown Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is present in most cervical cancer. Some recent research studies have shown that HPV testing may be more sensitive than traditional Pap smears at detecting precancerous lesions of the cervix.

Most of the HPV testing studies used DNA based technologies. The effectiveness of immunoassay based HPV testing for cervical cancer research remains unclear at this time.
