Understanding antimicrobial resistance can be challenging. However, a basic understanding of how bacteria become resistant will likely improve the clinical microbiology bench technologist’s ability to recognize potential problems with antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) results. This session will examine the basics of antimicrobial resistance among contemporary pathogens. An emphasis will be placed on explaining how various types of resistance mechanisms lead to specific AST results. The goal is to provide background information to increase the bench technologist’s confidence in reporting AST results.
