MICA Legionella Certified by AOAC

Diamidex’s solution to detect Legionella pneumophila in 48 hours and in CFU is now AOAC Performance Tested MethodsSM (PTM) certified. The certification demonstrates that MICA Legionella gives “equivalent or better results than ISO 11731:2017” in only 48 hours!

MICA Legionella is the Diamidex Microcolony counter that allows automatic enumeration of Legionella pneumophila after only 48 hours of incubation instead of 10 to 14 days with ISO 11731:2017 standard method.

Results are given in Colony Forming Units (CFU) which is the gold standard for microbiology enumeration.

Thanks to its AOAC PTM Certification MICA Legionella is now able to be implemented worldwide in microbiological laboratories in order to enhance the time to results and therefore prevent bacterial contamination and spreading of Legionellosis outbreaks.

Method Comparison: correlation between MICA Legionella & ISO 11731 Method
AOAC INTERNATIONAL is an independent, third-party, not-for-profit association and voluntary consensus standards developing organization. As an international leader of analytical excellence with experts dedicated to developing and validating standards, methods, and technologies of global relevance.

The study certified by the AOAC Performance Tested Method (PTM) program compares the performance and robustness of MICA Legionella with the reference method ISO 11731:2017 for the enumeration of culturable L. pneumophila.

When compared to ISO 11731:2017, MICA Legionella gives similar results in 48h than the standard method in 10 days on a simple matrix (hot sanitary water). On complex matrixes (cooling tower water), MICA Legionella can perform better than the standard method, thanks to the shorter culture incubation time that makes it less sensitive to background flora interference at reading time.

MICA Legionella: an automated reading, fast and reliable
MICA Legionella is a detection method allowing detection of culturable microcolonies of Legionella pneumophila at 48h of growth instead of 10 days in the standard procedures. The original water sample is concentrated by membrane filtration as in the standard procedure. The membrane is then laid over a drop of culture supplement on a standard Legionella agar plate (GVPC).

The MICA Legionella Artificial Intelligence analyzer then uses multiple parameters to specifically identify Legionella pneumophila microcolonies and gives a result as a concentration of Legionella pneumophila in the original sample in CFU/liter.

MICA Legionella in a nutshell:

  • Culture-based method
  • AOAC Certified
  • 48h incubation only vs 10-14 days with standard methods
  • Same workflow key points as ISO 11731:2017 standard method
  • Detects and enumerates L. pneumophila exclusively
  • Detects and enumerates L. pneumophila of all serogroups
  • Detects and enumerates only culturable L. pneumophila
