Emergency Special Focus on Covid-19 (2019-nCoV, Coronavirus)

First reported in Wuhan, China on 31st December 2019 novel coronavirus 2019-nCoV has been officially named Covid-19 by the World Health Organisation.

The virus itself has been designated SARS-CoV-2 by the Coronavirus Study Group (CSG) of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. The CSG formally recognises this virus as a sister to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses (SARS-CoVs) of the species Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus and designates it as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

In this rapidmicrobiology emergency special focus you will find options for specimen collection and diagnostic kits.  Please note that many kits are not authorised for human diagnostic use but for research use only, please ensure any kit is suitable for your application.

We've also created a Test Method Guide for COVID-19, which gives a summary of the origin of the outbreak, the structure of the virus, testing methods currently in use and in development. You will also find a list of suppliers, contact details and a link to their web page. You can visit this guide here: rapidmicrobiology.com Test Methods to Detect the Novel Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), the Causative Agent of Covid-19

Information on this page is intended for healthcare professionals, any specimen collection and subsequent testing should be performed according to relevant agency guidelines such as:
