Emergency Special Focus on Covid-19 (2019-nCoV, Coronavirus)
First reported in Wuhan, China on 31st December 2019 novel coronavirus 2019-nCoV has been officially named Covid-19 by the World Health Organisation.
The virus itself has been designated SARS-CoV-2 by the Coronavirus Study Group (CSG) of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. The CSG formally recognises this virus as a sister to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses (SARS-CoVs) of the species Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus and designates it as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
In this rapidmicrobiology emergency special focus you will find options for specimen collection and diagnostic kits. Please note that many kits are not authorised for human diagnostic use but for research use only, please ensure any kit is suitable for your application.
We've also compiled a spreadsheet detailing Covid-19 (2019-nCoV) molecular detection kits including their brand name, manufacturer, country of manufacture, technology, target, key advantage, availability and authorisation/application. Download the spreadsheet of Covid 19 (2019-nCoV) molecular detection kits here
Information on this page is intended for healthcare professionals, any specimen collection and subsequent testing should be performed according to relevant agency guidelines such as:
- CDC - Evaluating and Reporting Persons Under Investigation (PUI),
- CDC - Interim Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines for Handling and Processing Specimens Associated with 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)
- WHO - Laboratory testing for 2019-nCoV in humans.
CDC has released Interim Guidelines for Collecting, Handling, and Testing Clinical Specimens from PUIs for 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). COPAN’s Kit of 3mL UTM® & 2 FLOQSwabs™ can be used to investigate novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) as per CDC guidelines.
Based on CDC guidelines for clinical specimens, swabs with synthetic fibers and plastic shafts, like Puritan flock swabs, should be used for nasopharyngeal collections when 2019-nCoV is suspected. It’s important not to use calcium alginate swabs or those with wooden shafts.
Microbiologics is your trusted partner in biomaterials for research of the 2019n-CoV. We offer live & inactivated 229E and OC43 coronaviruses (which contain the entire RNA virus genome) and subgenomic DNA clones of the HKU and NL66 coronaviruses.
A successful diagnostic test begins at sample collection because improper sampling can result in an inadequate specimen, rendering a diagnostic test inconclusive or incorrect.
Adam Herridge, Product Manager at Primerdesign, talks to rapidmicrobiology.com about the genesig 2019-nCoV qPCR Kit, the first diagnostics kit to be made in Europe with 100% specificity, and relays to us his concerns over his competitor's products.
On the frontline developing qPCR primers/probes to detect 2019-nCoV is Prof. Antonio Marinez-Murcia, CEO of Genetic PCR Solutions (GPS™). In this interview with rapidmicrobiolgy.com, he talks about why their ready-to-use qPCR format can detect multiple variants of this virus.
