Harlequin™ CSA-DFI Launch Completes Lab M's C. sakazakii Range

Harlequin™ CSA-DFI
With the launch of the new Harlequin™ CSA-DFI, Lab M will offer a complete range of Cronobacter sakazakii chromogenic media.

Based on the Druggan-Forsythe-Iversen (DFI) formulation, the new medium is the third in Lab M's family of products for the isolation and identification of C. sakazakii. The range is designed to meet current C. sakazakii testing protocols.
C. sakazakii is associated with sporadic cases and outbreaks of meningitis, necrotising enterocolitis and sepsis, especially in newborns. There is therefore a strong need for simplified methods of testing for this foodborne pathogen. In response to this need, Lab M now supplies the three key media for C. sakazakii isolation and identification:
  • Harlequin™ CSIM - Cronobacter sakazakii Isolation Medium (ISO)

  • CSEB - Cronobacter sakazakii Enrichment Broth (ISO)

  • Harlequin™ CSA-DFI - Cronobacter sakazakii Agar - DFI Formulation

As with Harlequin CSIM (ISO), Harlequin CSA-DFI uses a-glucosidase activity to differentiate C. sakazakii strains from other members of the Enterobacteriaceae.

The production of a-glucosidase by the pathogen results in hydrolysis of the chromogenic substrate and the formation of green colonies. Hydrogen sulphide-producing organisms such as Salmonella and Proteus species appear grey, brown or black. Selectivity is achieved by the inclusion of sodium desoxycholate which serves to inhibit the growth of most Gram-positive organisms.
