Exclusive AK Licence Agreement for Acolyte Biomedica

Acolyte Biomedica Ltd and Ploughshare Innovations Ltd, both based at Porton Down UK, have negotiated and agreed an exclusive global licence for the application of Adenylate Kinase (AK) detection technology in research applications. This will allow the enumeration of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

AK is accepted as a highly sensitive and rapid marker of viable cell numbers. Acolyte has already incorporated AK technology into its BacLite® products for rapid detection of MRSA bacteria in clinical samples and gram-negative bacteria in research. This extension will allow Acolyte to apply their proprietary skills wherever cells are used in medical, life sciences, and pharmaceutical research.

Unlike ATP, AK is present at constant levels in all eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells irrespective of the organism's metabolic state. The amplification of the conversion of ADP to ATP gives sensitivities up to 100 times those of standard ATP bioluminescence and up to 1 million times those of conventional optical measurements.

An exclusive licence has also been granted to Acolyte for use of AK in the control and monitoring of cell cultures to include the field of bioreactor fermentation.

AK technology was originally developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory a trading agency of UK Ministry of Defence and Ploughshare Innovations have responsibility for managing the commercial exploitation of the technology.
