Easy, Rapid Monitoring of E.coli and Enterococcus spp. in Recreational Water

GeneDisc qPCR
An Innovative System for the Convenient, Rapid Monitoring of E.coli and Enterococcus spp. in Recreational Water

Detecting dangerous microbial contamination in recreational water can be a double-edged sword for many health officials - one that cuts both ways when dealing with protecting public health versus minimizing the impact of lengthy beach closures. This balancing act becomes even more critical when those decisions result in false alarms or delayed reaction.

To reduce these risks, Pall Life Sciences has introduced the GeneDisc® qPCR system, a real-time microbial detection system for fresh and saltwater.
Easy, reliable microbial test results without the wait

Pall's GeneDisc System delivers rapid and dependable microbial test results, providing health officials with the answers they need to make informed decisions quickly. This innovative system uses qPCR to detect the presence of target DNA in water samples. From sample preparation to final results in as little as three hours, GeneDisc technology allows health officials around the world to:

  • Get rapid microbial water quality results for improved public safety

  • Reduce economic loss due to lengthy beach or facility closures

  • Diminish public alarm from unnecessary or lengthy restriction on access to recreational waters

  • Detect and quantify the presence of pathogens such as E.coli and Enterococcus spp. within three hours
Designed for routine quality monitoring, the GeneDisc DNA Extractor is a self-contained, semi-automatic workstation for sample DNA extraction and purification that protects samples from contamination, optimizes workflow and minimizes sample handling to reduce errors. It streamlines and guides the test operator through the sample preparation and purification process to provide consistent and reproducible assays. The GeneDisc system is comprised of three components: the GeneDisc DNA Extractor, the GeneDisc plate, and the GeneDisc Cycler.

The GeneDisc DNA Extractor and the GeneDisc plate for test samples were specifically engineered and optimized for high-volume testing and minimal technician intervention to make microbial monitoring of recreational water a simple, routine process. In traditional qPCR testing, preparation and handling of DNA primers and probes are common points where assay contamination can occur. Set-up of positive and negative controls can also be a source of error. The unique 'closed-system' design of the GeneDisc plate incorporates pre-loaded primers, probes and assay controls in a ready-to-use plate. Minimal handling of the sample helps improve consistency and accuracy of the assay.

The segmented, circular arrangement of the GeneDisc plate accommodates processing of six or twelve samples per plate. When installed in the GeneDisc Cycler, the circular GeneDisc plate advances the individual wells through fixed zones for consistent heating and cooling, resulting in quick and accurate PCR cycles. The cycler incorporates two wavelengths of light as each cell advances past the detector, allowing detection of two targets per well.

The easy-to-use GeneDisc Cycler directs the technician through the necessary steps of entering the sample information. A simple scan of the GeneDisc plate barcode selects the correct analysis. During each run, the amount of DNA is measured and displayed on an easy-to-read LCD screen. Finally, the GeneDisc Cycler performs data analysis of the controls and test samples to provide clear, concise and accurate reporting of the data.

Once the sample has been collected and filtered, microbial detection can be accomplished in three easy steps:

  • 1. Purify DNA in the GeneDisc Extractor

  • 2. Pipette samples into the GeneDisc plate

  • 3. Insert the plate into the GeneDisc Cycler
Pall's GeneDisc System is streamlined to be the easiest-to-use qPCR equipment on the market. Its innovative design minimizes operator intervention and error to provide health officials with fast, quantitative and reproducible results - making it an ideal tool for protecting public safety.
