Speed-oligo®, Complete, Simple PCR-based Diagnosis for Whooping Cough

Speed-oligo®
Bordetella pertussis is the microorganism which causes the whooping cough; a very contagious infectious disease worldwide spread that affects mainly children aged 0 to 4. It is usually lethal for breast-fed children.

Nowadays, whooping cough is becoming a major health problem due to several factors:
  • Progressive loss of vaccine effectiveness over time
  • Decreasing protection against this disease in some communities
  • Atypical presentation of the disease leading to a low suspicion rate on the doctor's side
  • Change in the average age of presentation
Culture isolation is the reference technique in Bordetella research, although it is technically complex and offers low sensitivity. Even if the serology is a reliable technique, samples obtained during the acute stage and the convalescence are required; which is difficult sometimes. Moreover serology is not appropriate to distinguish between infection and vaccination.

Due to its application in clinical diagnosis, PCR technique has become the reference technique.

SPEED-OLIGO® BORDETELLA
is an oligochromatographic test for the qualitative detection and differentiation of Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis in clinical samples.
SPEED-OLIGO® BORDETELLA
It includes three tests lines:

  1. Test line specific to B. parapertussis (corresponding to a selected target inside insertion sequence IS1001).

  2. Test line corresponding to the insertion sequence IS481. It increases the sensibility of the test since it is a repeated sequence in the B. pertussis genome.

  3. Test line that amplifies the specific fragment of the ptxA gene promoter, exclusive to B. pertussis and provides higher specificity to the product.
