Bad Bugs Need Drugs: Challenges of AST for Staphylococcus.
Laboratory detection of antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus is changing because the epidemiology of Staphylococcus is changing, new antimicrobial resistance is emerging, efforts to prevent infections with resistant Staphylococcus are increasing, and new antimicrobial agents for treatment of Staphylococcus infections are anticipated.
In this presentation, we will discuss how these changes can be translated to practical laboratory practices and strategies for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe emerging antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus spp.
- Identify laboratory methods to detect emerging antimicrobial resistance.
- Understand the role of cefoxitin and oxacillin susceptibility tests for the detection of beta-lactam resistance
- Understand controversies in the detection of reduced susceptibility to vancomycin in Staphylococcus spp.
- Describe the antimicrobial activity of new antimicrobial agents for treatment of Staphylococcus infections.
